'Recent contributions to debates about university training argue that the current practice of social research should serve as a guideline to determine the contents of research methods training. However, the quality of training cannot only be measured by the degree to which it is in line with the typical superficial routine application of a certain array of established procedures. The article outlines a number of features concerning which current research practice doesn't always follow highest standards and thus cannot be used as a criterion against which to judge the training in research methods; also, some problems are outlined that result from inadequate presentations in introductions to data analysis and computer software.'
