Measurement and quality control of context-related survey data by means of multi-level analysis: the example of social capital in urban quarters

(Autorenreferat)... view less

'Due to methodological problems, contextual effects on individual outcomes are a rarely investigated topic in empirical social research. Multilevel analysis as a new statistical method can help to integrate macro-micro-links into models of individual behaviour. In this article, two features of this approach are discussed. First, I describe an 'ecometric' method of assessing the quality of survey data on contextual properties like the 'social climate' of neighbourhoods or companies derived by aggregating individual-level data. Second, I demonstrate how the simultaneous use of individual- and context-level predictors in multilevel models can correct individualistic fallacies. Recent survey data on the social capital of neighbourhoods is taken as an example.' (author's abstract)|... view less
