(Autorenreferat)... view less

'The concept 'social capital' refers to social cohesion with a potential for political, social and economic utility. Motivated by the deterioration of traditional norms, trust and ties, and the demand for new forms of social cohesion, the OECD organised the programme 'Measuring Social Capital'. Statistical indicators and survey questions for comparative and international studies should be developed until 2004. After an overview of the term 'social capital', the report summarizes discussions and research results presented at a conference in Budapest, in May 2003, about the effects of social capital on: health and mortality; educational results; well-being; and work satisfaction. Furthermore, concepts and methods are reviewed for the following purpose: (1) allowing a conceptual differentiation between internal group ties ('bonding') and cooperation, and conflict regulations between groups ('bridging'); (2) supporting a specification of different levels of social proximity and of group sizes.'
