"The current situation of the automotive industry is representative for the entire French economy. The automotive sector and its economic and social development since 2008 play a crucial role in the debate about the economic crisis and its management. The crisis in the automotive sector is based on a weak demand for new cars, a growing interest in cheap vehicle segments, and the increasing wage competition at the international level, which is reinforced by European integration. In response to the crisis, the French government has decided to provide state aid: in the form of loans to the auto maker, the establishment of a fund for the benefit of suppliers, a 'Strategic Fund' for endangered companies, a car-scrap bonus and the optimization of partial unemployment. Despite this intervention on different levels, several issues remain problematic: Many suppliers are in a precarious situation, the industrial locations suffer problems in terms of a low competitiveness. The policy coordination at the European level is currently insufficient." (author's abstract)... view less
