(Autorenreferat)... view less

"In France the Socialist Party is the most important opposition party, the strongest
left-wing force and the only political movement in position to replace the government in power. After another defeat in the presidential and parliamentary elections of 2007, however, the party remains ideologically divided and weakened by inner-party tensions. Even though Martine Aubry defeated Ségolène Royal in a close race for First Secretary at the party convention in Reims in November 2008 and thus managed to strengthen her position, the competition between the two is likely to further undermine party coherence. During the convention, the Socialists missed the window of opportunity to come up with a common political approach and to develop a new strategy for
the next elections. Under these circumstances, a victory of the Socialist Party in
the next presidential and parliamentary elections of 2012 seems unlikely." (author's abstract)... view less
