"Technological breakthroughs, California's zero emission vehicle regulation, competition in innovation, and the vision of sustainable automobility have led to developmental efforts worth billions of dollars since the late 1990s and made the fuel cell operating on hydrogen the future technology in the automobile industry. Representatives of the automobile industry see the fuel cell as the first real alternative to the firmly established internal combustion engine. However, the establishment of this radical new drive-train technology as well as the required transformation of the large technological system of the automobile proved to be, like all basic innovations, more like a marathon than a short track race - with an outcome that is not yet known. These now extended perspectives present the opportunity for social scientists specialising in research on mobility and innovation to assess the attempt to change the basic technology in the car industry in 'real-time'. The following study gives a comprehensive account of the activities and strategies of the automakers relating to hydrogen and fuel cells and offers a sound empirical basis for further and more specific studies on the subject."
