(Autorenreferat)... view less

"Critical citizens have been discussed controversially for many years. They are considered an indicator for the health of democracies as well as a threat to democratic stability. I will contribute some empirical evidence to this controversy and scrutinize the compatibility of the profiles of critical citizens with democratic attitudes, e.g., political knowledge, alienation, or participation. In contrast to the common definition of criticism as discontentment, I look at the normative disposition to deal with political objects and issues, i.e., the perception of political criticism as a civic duty. The empirical data revealed that citizens with this disposition participate more often, they are better informed, identify more often with politics and democracy, and their willingness to defend democracy is above average."
