Interkulturelle Kontakte im Rahmen der Entwicklungskooperation in Zinder (Niger): ein Zugang und ein Problem

Abstract

'Der Beobachtung folgend, dass europäische Entwicklungshelfer in Zinder (Niger) relativ wenige private Kontakte zu den Einwohnern der Stadt pflegen, versucht der Beitrag, sich einer möglichen Ursache dieser Kontaktarmut anzunähern. Am Beispiel der Beziehung zwischen Entwicklungshelfern und Hausangestellten wird ein allgemeines Problem interkultureller Begegnungen herausgearbeitet, das durch das Zusammentreffen kulturell unterschiedlicher Beziehungsmodelle und den unterschiedlichen Umgang mit ihren normativen Implikationen deutlich wird: die Erfahrung der Grenzen eigener Verstehensmodelle und der eigenen Handlungsfähigkeit. Diese Erfahrungen können dazu führen, dass Entwicklungshelfer es vorziehen, ihre interkulturellen Kontakte zu reduzieren. Die Überlegungen zur Kontaktarmut im interkulturellen Kontext folgen dem Grundgedanken, dass im Rahmen einer Ethnologie der Entwicklung Entwicklungskooperation auch als das Zusammentreffen kulturell unterschiedlicher Formen des Umgangs mit dem Fremden betrachtet werden muss. Neben der Untersuchung von Diskursen, Institutionen und lokalen Akteuren gilt es dabei auch, interpersonelle interkulturelle Begegnungen im Entwicklungskontext in den Blick zu nehmen. Hierzu bietet sich an, die Forschungstraditionen der Ethnologie der Entwicklung und die der Erforschung interkultureller Kontakte stärker aufeinander zu beziehen.' (Autorenreferat)

'The article deals with the questions why private intercultural encounters of European aid workers with the local population of Zinder (Niger) are so rare, and what male the expatriates avoid intercultural contacts. By using the example of a conflict in the relationship between a cook and his European boss, a general Problem of intercultural encounters is elaborated: due to the contact of different cultural models of the relationship and the differing ways of actors coping with the moral implications of them, the expats' experience the limitations of their Ideals of understanding and their ideas of agency. The experience that ones proper model of understanding is contested, as well as the experience of not being able to ad in a consistent way may result in the expats' withdrawal from encounters. The aim of this paper is to underline the importance of an Anthropology of Development which deals not only with discourses, institutions and local actors of the development world, but also with interpersonal intercultural contacts. In focusing an the culturally different ways of coping with strangers and strangeness, another perceptive an the work of development cooperation might be added to the discussion. Therefore it seems to be important that anthropological research an development cooperation and multi-disciplinary research an intercultural contacts get more closely connected.' (author's abstract)|
