New nationalism and development in Africa (review article)

Abstract

About fifty years after the independence of most former colonies on the African continent, books on African nationalism again rank high on the agenda of the international academic discussion. A selection of three recent publications demonstrates the advances made in scholarly analysis in the meantime as well as the wide range of related subjects. The new nationalism in Africa and elsewhere shows remarkable differences both in its roots and its impact, compared with that of the national independence movements of the early 1960s.

Etwa fünfzig Jahre nach der Unabhängigkeit der meisten früheren Kolonien auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent werden Bücher zum Nationalismus in Afrika in der internationalen wissenschaftlichen Debatte erneut hoch gehandelt. Eine Auswahl dreier Neuerscheinungen zeigt auf, welche Fortschritte die wissenschaftliche Analyse in der Zwischenzeit gemacht hat sowie die Reichweite der angrenzenden Themen. Ein Vergleich des neuen Nationalismus in Afrika mit dem der nationalen Unabhängigkeitsbewegungen der frühen 1960er Jahre lässt bemerkenswerte Unterschiede sowohl der Hintergründe als auch der Stoßrichtung deutlich werden.

Environ cinquante ans après l'indépendance de la plupart des anciennes colonies sur le continent africain, des livres sur le nationalisme africain se classent à nouveau élevée sur l'ordre du jour de la discussion académique internationale. Une sélection de trois publications récentes démontre les progrès réalisés entretemps dans l'analyse scientifique ainsi que le large éventail de sujets connexes. Le nouveau nationalisme en Afrique et ailleurs montre des différences remarquables tant dans ses racines et de son impact, par rapport à celle des mouvements nationaux d'indépendance du début des années 1960.
