On the level of political theorizing, this critique is primarily levelled against the currently most prominent liberal theory, John Rawls's ideal theory of justice. I will critically discuss the methodological and conceptual criticisms put forward by non-ideal and realist theory against Rawls and identify two shortcomings in his approach: the conceptualization of power and conflict and the inability to address injustice. Drawing on this, I will defend Shklar's liberalism of fear as a reconceptualization of liberal theory, which not only allows for a conflictual vision of the political, but also for a focus on injustice and means to address it. Her conflictual liberalism thus develops a progressive perspective on political conflict as a necessary aspect of addressing injustice.... view less
