Der Artikel untersucht die Mobilität, Grenzstellenarbeit und Karriereaussichten von chinesischen Beschäftigten, die nach einem Studium im Ausland in ihrem Heimatland für ein westliches multinationales Unternehmen arbeiten. Er leistet damit drei Beiträge zur arbeitssoziologischen Globalisierungsforschung: 1) Er zeigt, dass unter diesen Rückkehrern ein Typus von transnational mobilem Beschäftigten zu finden ist, für den die Kombination von individueller und organisierter Mobilität charakteristisch ist und der als 'Expatriate of Host-Country Origin' bezeichnet werden kann. 2) Der Artikel legt dar, dass chinesische Rückkehrer in Fach- und niedrigen Führungspositionen eingesetzt werden, um als interkulturelle 'Boundary Spanning'-Assistenten zwischen westlichen Expatriates und dem Auslandsstandort zu vermitteln. 3) Abschließend entwickelt er die These, dass Rückkehrer verstärkt für Schlüsselpositionen in Betracht gezogen werden, weil sie gute Voraussetzungen mitbringen, um auch als 'Boundary Spanner' zur entfernten Zentrale zu fungieren und somit die 'gesamte' Grenzstellenarbeit zu übernehmen.... view less

The article investigates the mobility, boundary work and career prospects of Chinese employees who work for a Western multinational company in their home country after study-ing overseas. It thus makes three contributions to research on globalization in the sociology of work: 1) It shows that among these returnees there is a type of transnationally mobile employee who is characterized by a combination of individual and organized mobility and who can be described as an 'expatriate of host-country origin'. 2) It shows that Chinese returnees are employed in specialist and low-level management positions to act as intercultural 'boundary spanning' assistants between Western expatriate managers and the subsidiary. 3) Finally, it develops the thesis that returnees are increasingly considered for key positions because they are also able to act as ‘boundary spanners’ to the headquarters and thus take over the 'entire' boundary work.... view less
