Sollte sich die Politische Theorie und Ideengeschichte mehr dem dystopischen Denken zuwenden? Der Beitrag argumentiert, dass der bisherige politiktheoretische Fokus auf Utopien im Sinne einer politiktheoretischen Zukunftsforschung um Dystopien ergänzt werden sollte, und zwar in mehrfacher Hinsicht: Einerseits handelt es sich bei Dystopien um einen gehaltvollen Gegenstand der ideengeschichtlichen Untersuchung und aktuellen Reflexion, der gerade aufgrund seiner handlungsmotivierenden Qualität mehr in den Fokus genommen werden sollte. Andererseits aber kann dystopisches Argumentieren und Erzählen selbst, in Form von Szenarienbildung und Gedankenexperimenten, als Modus politischen Denkens genutzt werden - wenn auch nur für manche Zwecke und unter Beachtung einiger Fallstricke.... view less

Should Political Theory and the History of Political Thought engage more with dystopian thought? The article argues that Political Theory's focus on utopianism should be accompanied by a focus on dystopianism on several levels. On the one hand, dystopian narratives are a worthwhile subject of historical and contemporary analysis, no least due to their effects on political action. On the other hand, dystopian arguments and narratives can themselves constitute a useful mode of political theorizing especially in realist Political Theory for instance through the plausible design of worst-case scenarios and thought experiments - as long as their appropriate function and their pitfalls are kept in mind.... view less
