Munich's settlement development was essentially carried out in accordance with the specifications of the regional plan and the urban development plan along the S-Bahn axes, which connect the environs of Munich with the city centre in the form of a star. In the urban area, the settlement strategy "compact-urban-green" is pursued, according to which dense, mixed usage structures are planned in the catchment area of suburban, underground and tram stations, while the areas kept free between the axes serve for local recreation and the supply of fresh air. This urban development planning strategy is supported by the integrated action and measure concept of the transport development plan, which primarily provides for the expansion of the public transport system and the promotion of local mobility. In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of inhabitants, which is also forecast for the coming years. The resulting impacts on the road and rail networks and the associated air and noise pollution on main roads in the urban area make it necessary to further expand the public transport system in particular. This is also necessary because the existing road network in the city can only be extended or expanded to a limited extent.... view less
