With the rise of digitalization employees are faced with several challenges. One of it is a more (and kind of a new) formalization of work. This is because digital technologies are in their core formalistic. The consequences become clear when looking at such work that basically needs self-determination, informal practices, and acting situationally. One example for this difficulty is working on and with humans: interactive work that substantially includes elements of human working assets which cannot be objectified and controlled via formalization (such as the negotiation of services, the production of cooperation, emotional labour and sentimental work). Although organizations demand self-determination, the actions of employees should be transparent, formally communicable, independent of persons and documentable. Beyond traditional methods of formalization, digitalization is exploited to fully reorganize work (processes). But due to rising uses and (extra) efforts caused by the integration of formalized/formalistic systems, exactly those human working assets come under pressure that are not accessible and exploitable in this way.... view less
