Untersucht wird in zeithistorischer Perspektive die Bedeutung von Berufsfachlichkeit für die Arbeit im Verkauf. Gefragt wird, wie es möglich ist, dass der Handel in so hohem Maße auf fachlich qualifiziertes weibliches Personal zugreifen konnte, ohne die im berufsfachlichen Segment des Arbeitsmarktes erwartbaren Bedingungen zu bieten. These ist, dass im Einzelhandel damals ein sektorspezifisches Spiel zwischen Erwartungen und Ansprüchen der Beschäftigten, der Unternehmen sowie der KonsumentInnen stattfand, das breite Spielräume für Konstruktionen von Berufsfachlichkeit ließ. Untersucht werden Konstellationen von Berufsfachlichkeit und Geschlechterverhältnissen im Verkauf zu Beginn der 1980er Jahre anhand einer sekundäranalytischen Auswertung von Interviews aus Betriebsfallstudien. Ob der Arbeit im Verkauf die Merkmale der Berufsfachlichkeit zugeschrieben werden, hängt von den konkreten Formen der Arbeitsorganisation ab. Im impliziten Kampf um die Ressource Berufsfachlichkeit geraten die weiblichen Beschäftigten ins Abseits, weil ihre in einer verkaufsspezifischen Ausbildung gewonnenen Qualifikationen situativ eingekleidet werden mit und umgedeutet werden zu persönlichen Eigenschaften und alltagsweltlichen Erfahrungen. The article explores in a historic perspective the importance of occupational qualifications for retail work. How is it possible that retail companies can employ high percentages of vocationally trained mostly female workers without offering working conditions that usually are connected with occupational qualifications? The article argues that in retail trade there is a sector-specific game between the expectations and claims of employees, employers and consumers that offers broad spaces for constructions of occupational expertise. Constellations of occupational expertise are explored by secondary analysis of empirical material from the early 1980s. The recognition of retail work as occupationally qualified work depends on the concrete modes of work organization. Over the course of implicitly ongoing processes occupational knowledge and competences of female employees in particular become re-defined as personal qualities and as based on everyday experiences.
