(Autorenreferat)... view less

Since 2000, the number of primary school children has been declining in all federal states of Austria (with the exception of Vienna). This article discusses two major trends which align with this development: the closure of small schools, when they become too small on the one hand, and the rise of small schools because of falling numbers of pupils, on the other. It is shown that although all federal states reported decreasing numbers of elementary school pupils, the circumstances of small school closure differ widely. This effects also the existing locations of primary schools and the average class size. Interestingly, it turns out that the differences between class sizes in small schools and in year-based classes are not as big as one would think. (author's abstract)... view less
