"The distinction between 'good' and 'bad' parents is part of the standard repertoire of social reform discourse and of 'generational ordering'. It has a centuries-long history. This is presented in a short historical digression, focusing on informative stages. This differentiation between 'good' and 'bad' parents is also characteristic of the current debate on the inequality of education. Yet, there is a discrepancy between the general credibility that is given to the distinction and its empirical validity, which is shown by an overview on the state of research and newer large-scale studies of empirical education and socialization research. The focus on parents corresponds to a 'deficit thinking' dominating everyday debates as well as the scientific approach to the topic. It implies 'blaming the victim' and excludes explanations that are not based on the assumed deficits of the actors involved. A possible explanatory model will be formulated; it focuses on interactions in and with school, in which all actors involved, teachers, parents and children, take social reproduction into consideration and react to it."
