After the long neglect during state socialism the historical quarters of the cities of East Central Europe experienced a further decline in the 1990s as a consequence of transformation. An upgrading process (gentrification) well-known from the western cities remained isolated. The miserable condition of historical neighbourhoods is one of the greatest challenges of urban development in the region. However, recently there have been more and more signs of revitalisation of residential quarters, especially in the inner-part of Budapest. The main aim of this paper is to analyse the outcome of the revitalisation activities having taken place in the inner quarters of Budapest through empirical investigations. Our analysis is based on a detailed mapping which registered the actual revitalisation process of the building stock, as well as qualitative research carried out among actors (municipal organisations, investors etc.) responsible for such activities and (new) residents of recently revitalised neighbourhoods.
