(Autorenreferat)... view less

Rather extensive international geographic literature is available dealing with the sweeping changes that took place in the former socialist block after 1989. The Macedonian region, however, has been given a backseat and relevant studies only provide readers with general information. In the first half of the study a summarising section in presented about the historical background of the ethnical spatial structure of the Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) based on the data of the last two official censuses (1994 and 2002). The summarising section is followed by the presentation of the economic spatial structure of the country based on the available data. The last section is dedicated to the testing of the hypothesis whether the fact that the largest minority groups -the Albanians- are concentrated in the most backward regions of the country and the consequent economic tension sow the seeds of ethnic conflicts.
