The aim of this article is to understand how the German expatriates of the 80's and 90's in France experienced the cultural and social distance of the two countries, what kind of experiences as foreigners they had and how they have managed to find their status in the French society and to get used to the local culture (highlighting conventions, manners, values etc.) and society. We will analyze the lifestyles of Germans in France in the first place from a subjective viewpoint, from their perception as strangers. Classifying typologies of integration will be put aside on purpose. However we are interested in migrant's perception of their new environment. The important outcomes of the study are: Through socialization the culture of origin influences the individuals all their lives and causes some perpetual strangeness in a second culture. People have to find an appropriate status for their culture of origin so that they better bear experiences of strangeness. Therefore a lot of adaptations are necessary in order to live also one's culture of origin in a foreign country, without getting locked in with it. Finally a lot of migrants benefit from a stronger personality thanks to their expatriation.... view less
