Tobacco use is undergoing a process of relabeling. Whereas it was once widely seen as 'normal', it is now undergoing a labeling process that makes it a form of deviant behavior. The paper deals with the change in people's attitudes towards tobacco bans in the public. It is based on three representative mail surveys in the general population of the city of Hamburg, Germany, in the years before and alter the introduction of smoking bans in restaurant and pubs, based on a random sample from the city register and conducted in the years 2004, 2008 and 2011 (N between 410-689). The surveys document that the support for smoking bans has increased over time. But this does not always include the plea for total restrictions, but often for partial restrictions only, as in case of pubs. Whether someone argues in favor of restrictions is mainly dependent on the perception of health hazards due to passive smoking. Respondents who rate their health as 'very good' have a greater inclination than others to prefer smoking bans. This relationship did not exist in earlier surveys. It is assumed that the new constellation is a reflection of an emerging situation where the support of smoking bans has become part of a self-perceived healthy lifestyle.... view less
