(Autorenreferat)... view less

"This introductory article deals with the term international migration and its different forms.
The following conceptual considerations see migration as a process which is – put simply – composed of three phases: the emergence of a willingness and resolution to migrate, the search for a possible destination and the decision as to which member of the household, if any, will eventually migrate as well as social integration at the intended location. The micro theoretical concept of place utility is of central importance for this process. It simultaneously allows the incorporation of e.g. macro and micro economic conditions, historically evolved interdependencies between countries, the social context at the place of origin as well as in the destination country, or existing migrants' networks into descriptions of the complex decision finding process. The article concludes with a summary of selected theoretical approaches that aim to explain international migration. In the context of recommended procedures the phenomenon of transnationalism holds an overriding significance." (author's abstract)... view less
