'The civil war in Tajikistan has aroused relatively little attention in the West. After the end of the superpower confrontation such conflicts became, it seemed, mere regional or even local events, at most of humanitarian, but hardly of any geopolitical interest. However, given an omnious increase in the number and extent of civil wars in the world after the Cold War, the likelihood has to be faced that soon they may endanger the stability of the international economic and political system as well. In the long run, the wealthy and stable 'North' will hardly be able to isolate itself from a turbulent 'South'. These worlds intersect, most obviously in the realm of the former Soviet Union. Tajikistan, altough seemingly so remote, therefore deserves at least a minimum of attention. The sources for this 'Bericht' are above all reports of the international and especially the Russian press; besides, materials publised in the West were used.' (author's abstract)... view less
