The interview is defined here as a form of communication of which the structure is asymetrical and functionally oriented. Its exploratory variant can be distinguished from other types of interviews by techniques aiming at covering the broadest possible cognitive area of the interviewed persons, within the limits of the research theme; these cognitive area may still be unknown or latent. In principle, the exploratory interview evolves in three different phases, according to the interviewing technique: almost normal conversation, narrative interview and/or interview of expert, reflexive focalisation. Given its complexity, this type of interview is more a tool for collecting typical subjective data than for registering objective representative facts. It means that it can be better used for developing a theory than for verifying a hypothesis. Because of its flexibility, it can be useful for reconstructing schemes of biographical interpretation as well as for gathering stocks of specific knowledge.... view less
