"With the expansion of day care, a heated debate has broken out on whether child care outside of the family at an early age due to maternal employment can harm young children. The article examines this question against the background of the current state of research in terms of attachment quality, cognitive development, as well as social and emotional development. It reaches the conclusion that child care for a limited time during the day outside of the family generally has no detrimental effect on the development of young children in any of the three areas relative to when it is provided solely by the mother or the father. However, with regard to social development, and in particular the development of aggression, limits are advisable because the time at which non-parental care is begun, its intensity, and in particular the quality of care do appear to play a central role here. In light of these findings, the article finishes by discussing two dilemmas which are of importance both for social discourse and for educational policy discourse." (author's abstract)... view less
