(Autorenreferat)... view less

"Although the interest in new forms of organization has been steadily increasing, our empirical knowledge as to their use, their determinants and their economic consequences remains rather limited. The following paper aims at closing this gap. It uses a longitudinal data set from the German metal industry that has been collected annually between 1991 and 1998 and demonstrates the economic relevance of 'high performance work practices' (HPWP). The empirical analysis reveals that the organization of work has changed considerably during the period under consideration. Moreover, it appears that not only the number of HPWP but also their specific combination have - other things equal - an economically relevant and statistically significant and positive influence on firm performance while at the same time their impact on labour demand is significant and negative. The latter finding is likely to explain the scepticism of many works councils towards these HPWP." (author's abstract)... view less
