(Autorenreferat)... view less

"This article examines the rote of workplace industrial relations in promoting social integration in workplaces with employees of German and foreign origin. Empirically based an interviews, group discussions and a standardized survey in three manufacturing companies, it describes Works councils as important actors for social integration at the workplace. Embedded in a Field of institutionalized industrial relations, they are crucial internal proponents of universalistic rule-application, which afford an opportunity for the non-particularistic articulation of interests. Equal treatment of employees seems to be a matter of course for works councils. Combined with mutual recognition resulting from the employees' cooperation in everyday work life, 'the surveyed companies' industrial relations produce comparative stable social integration. However, social inequality between different groups of origin persists." (author's abstract)... view less
