The theme of cultural landscape has in the last 15 years occupied an increasingly prominent position in German spatial development policy, whereby the combination of “suburban space” and “cultural landscape” has also played a role. This paper is intended to answer the following questions: which aims and demands are related to the linking of “cultural landscape” and “suburban space”, to what extent can a hegemonic discursive project be recognised in this, and why should cultural landscapes – particularly in suburban spaces – represent a field of action for spatial planning? Two methods of discourse analysis are used: the analysis of discursive strategies and the analysis of argument patterns. These methods are applied to a small selection of key texts. The argument pattern analysis reveals three types of argument pattern intended to justify the engagement of spatial planning in this field: the topoi of selfinterest, common good and suitability. In addition there is also the topos of “weak heroes”, although this points in a somewhat different direction. The linking of “cultural landscape” and “suburban space” involves the articulation of many at times contradictory demands. At most, only the rudimentaries of a clear hegemonic discursive project can be recognised.... view less
