"Cities have to change continously to meet the demands of their communities. Hereby it seems self-evident that their interdependencies with surrounding areas have to be observed and that needed adaptation measures can only be done in a common context. The regional scale has gained an important position both from the scientific-analytic and the planning-conceptual perspective. Central results of the conference of the ARL Young Professional’s Forum 2011 in Dortmund are that polycentric city regions (as spatial category) can basically not be separated from other spatial categories. Rather it became obvious that regional actions should also be the result of a regional need for action and thus the arena of cooperation should be derived from this." (author's abstract)... view less
