Sprache hat jedoch nicht immer dieselbe Rolle in der Migrationspolitik eingenommen. Ein Vergleich der migrationspolitischen Debatten in Deutschland und der Schweiz zeigt, dass Homogenitäts- und Assimilationsvorstellungen, ein Relikt aus der Zeit der Nationalstaatenbildung im 19.
