The development of individuality becomes understandable as the creation of something novel, consisting in the use of public forms of meaning and simultaneous deviations from their customary usage. By virtue of its relationship to all-encompassing worlds of meaning, the self becomes the product of a historic development, which extends beyond a person's biography into our cultural traditions. The existence of the self arises from and preserves itself through a constant correlative relationship between a world of its own and the worlds of "the Others": in an intermediary existence, in which alone human forms of novelty can arise.... view less
