Psychological action theories generally remain within the narrow limits of an intentionalistic or teleological rational model. Actors are thus conceived as rational and goal-oriented agents. This contribution criticizes this theoretical fixation and outlines a theoretical typology that supplements the intentionalistic rational model with a model of rule-oriented action and a narrative model. This theoretical typology aims at making more differentiated and more appropriate descriptions and explanations of actions possible. Scientific explanations in particular do not follow a single formal model but - depending on the typification of the action in question - follow various schemata that all propose alternatives to deductive-nomological and inductive-statistical explanations. In addition to action theoretical differentiations this contribution attempts to link action theory and subject and identity theory. In this context the notion of autonomy gains special importance. It will be argued that the conception of adecentred subject and the associated conception of adecentred autonomy matches well the presented theoretical typology of action. The "weakening" of the intentionalistic rational model guards action theory against rationalistic "illusions of autonomy". A typologically differentiated action theory regards action in its manifold dependencies and contingencies. Contrary to some "postmodern" critiques of an "autonomous rational subject" neither "autonomy" nor "reason" are discarded, but it proposes arguments for a revision of these notions that allows for more complexity.... view less
