'Arguing that Bourdieu's concept of habitus, when applied to the analysis of life-long (biographical) learning and educational processes, needs to be revised in terms of a theory of biography, the author presents her own concept of biographical learning habitus. As a result of a study of two generations in the milieu of Rostock shipyards workers, two distinct patterns of learning habitus emerge. Attention is drawn to the fact that there is a significant effect of societal frameworks on the continuity and change of these deep-seated patterns. As a conclusion, elements of an innovative concept of life-long learning as well as of (adult-centered) educational practice and research are proposed, drawing on theoretical reflections as well as on empirical findings.'
