'The present paper resumes Karl Mannheim's contribution to the development of interpretive, or reconstructive, research methods, in particular Mannheim's methodological reflections on the interpretation of worldviews, which he himself called the documentary method. This method was resumed and updated in terms of, both, method and methodology by sociologist Ralf Bohnsack who reworked it into a tool for reconstructive social research and, in particular, for analyzing individual and group interviews, pictures, photographs, and documents. The documentary method, providing a theory as well as a practice of sociological interpretation, can be seen as a tool for researchers to access unfamiliar social contexts and/ or the orientations, attitudes and actions bound up with them. Thus, the documentary method transcends the level of intuitive or deductive analysis and, at the same time, requires researchers to develop the analytical tools needed for mapping and explaining the actors' routine practices and atheoretical knowledge.'
