"As of the German Microcensus 2005, the household in publications of official statistics is represented by characteristics of the person with highest income within a household. Up to and including 2004, the concept of the household reference person was used for this purpose. This is the first person listed in the questionnaire, whereby certain guidelines for the proper order of the household members apply. In order to utilise the classification of the chief income earner e. g. for longitudinal analyses using previous Microcensus data, the following report describes how the chief income earner of a household can be generated by using data from 1996 through 2004."
