'In spite of its extensive legalisation in Germany, the field of prostitution still poses a grey social area, steeped in taboo and long excluded, for die greatest part, from any scholarly or scientific discourse, even within die social sciences. The background to this lies not only in die obstacles to its accessibility as an area of study, but also in the broad perceptual images which further complicate an open and critical debate within its research. Based upon an ethnographically oriented research project on prostitution in Frankfurt am Main the article takes as its subject questions on (conceptual) access to the field as well as questions arising from the methodological overcoming of the social conventionalisation, which have a significant impact on the perception and 'knowledge' of the field, not only in everyday life but also in research. Amongst chose aspects brought into view is the balance that has always to be taken into account in the processes of research in the social sciences between involvement and detachment (Elias 1990). That is to say between a (necessary) pathetic access on the one hand and on the other the (equally necessary) 'alienation' of the researched and thus (re)constructed social reality.'
