'Inspired by Bronfenbrenner's perspectives, the article tries to theoretically structure and empirically analyze the ecological conditions of health and illness. A multilayered ecological model is conceptualized, which focuses on the special conditions of East Germany. Selected indicators of health are well-being, complaints, sickness. The empirical findings have been generated from a representative survey in the Federal State of Sachsen-Anhalt (N=2090). They allow a distinguished impression from the subjective health state, which is connected with various aspects of the proximal environment and the lifetime spent. Multivariate analyses show special connotations of the various predictors for each of the indicators. However, there are no immediate effects of the classical socio-economic status, but effects of everyday psycho-social stress and physical handicaps. Furthermore, the age-factor correlates directly with subjective well-being and sickness, as well as indirectly with the frequency of complaints. Applying to Bronfenbrenner's major concepts, the proximal environment, the individual's transaction with it and the age are the strongest predictors for the self-reported health state.'
