Emotionalisation, civility, and rationality: towards a political theory of emotions

'With the buzzwords 'Personalisation', 'Americanisation', and 'Mediatisation', the discomfort with today's emotionalisation of the political sphere is expressed in current political discourse. The reason for this discomfort is the assumption, grounded in political common sense, that emotions are grit in the machine of rational political processes. This common, dualistic understanding of emotion and rationality, which stands in the way of a differentiated analysis of the interplay of emotions and politics, will be scrutinised in two steps. First, the sociological paradigm of societal rationalisation will be confronted with the findings of the current emotionalisation. Second, the question concerning the (potentially) rational content of emotions will be posed, systematically establishing the connection here to the emotion debate that has been taking place in English language areas in psychology, philosophy, and sociology since the late 1970s. Additionally, an expansion of the concept of political rationality will be proposed.' (author's abstract)|... view less
