'The object of the study is the participation of elder people in mail survey under varying conditions of establishing contact (anonymous vs. non-anonymous questionnaire, different arguments). It is shown that it is possible in mail surveys of people over 70 years old on sensitive topics (the period of national socialism) to obtain a response rate which is comparable to face-to face and telephone surveys of the general population. In contrast to common assumptions the elder are mostly able to fill in the questionnaire by themselves. The number of missing values is low and primarily influenced by education and the motivation to cooperate in the survey. Missing values due to misunderstandings because of format change on the other hand are primarily influenced by the lack support in answering the questionnaire, education and also age.'
