"'Georg Simmel and 'the Clamorous Splendor of the Scientific-technological Age''. Georg Simmel's ideas on the development of modern science and technology have rarely been discussed. This paper aims to highlight Simmel's writings with a special focus on his ideas of the autonomous development of modern science and technology. Most important here is his discussion on the production of side effects in the development of modern science and technology. Side effects can be understood as part of Simmel's concept of objective and subjective culture where the unintended development of objective culture is seen as a usual occurrence, not as an aberration of rational planning."
