We will show that historical consciousness is a fundamentally psychological concept. In this context, it is important to bear in mind the polyvalence of "history". It is to be understood as both a symbolically created construct and the practical way of effecting human existence. A psychology of historical consciousness must not therefore aim merely at historical constructions of time in the narrow sense of the word. A closer look at the concept of historical consciousness from a psychological point of view reveals this kind of consciousness to be a highly presupposition-laden personal competence that develops in practical communicative and discursive sociocultural contexts. Historical consciousness can only function with a minimum of historical knowledge. For this reason, a psychology of the historical sense can be understood as one of the building blocks towards a clarification of domain-specific acquisition of knowledge. Because historical consciousness is essentially a historic-narrative competence, such a psychology must be laid out as a narrative psychology dealing with a specifically pragmatic intelligence. For an adequate psychological conceptualisation of historical consciousness, as is eventually argued for and exemplary shown, empirical endeavours are, however, as important as theoretical reflections.... view less
