The arrival of the internet has given rise to a number of studies focusing on the psychosocial consequences of its use, that is of computer-mediated communication. One of their main focal points is its deviation from face-to-face communication, in particular the significance of the physical presence or absence of the participants in communication – which is seen as being of little importance by the promoters of computer mediated communication. An analysis of the arguments used proves them to be contradictory and therefore untenable. The aim of this article is to show that the argumentation used is indicative of the lack of theoretical foundation of the discussion as such, reflecting amongst other things the insufficient determination of the objects of social psychology affecting the perception of the phenomena as such. In a naively empirical mode the describable phenomenon of face-to-face communication is identified with its interpretation; i.e. the difference between the phenomenon and its interpretation is largely blurred. The comparison between FtfC and CmC is therefore a comparison of two unknowns.... view less
