"Patients expect better communication, more information, and a higher degree of involvement and participation concerning their treatment, than they actually get. Participation of the patient, to the degree he prefers, can lead to improved treatment outcomes. Doctors therefore need communication skills, which many of them feel they don't yet have. Effective teaching methods for helping doctors to acquire relevant communication skills are available. Successful doctor-patient-communication not only raises patient satisfaction but also doctors' own wellbeing. The concept of shared decision making is helpful in the description of aims and of ways leading to patient-centred communication between doctors and patients." (author's abstract)... view less
